What’s holding you back from scheduling your screening mammogram? For many women, it’s not the test itself—it’s the worry that comes with it.
It’s natural to feel anxious while you wait for your results. That’s why it’s so important to choose a breast imaging center that can get you seen in days, not weeks or months.
Northwest Breast Imaging Center in Post Falls offers fast access to mammograms in a relaxing environment designed with your comfort in mind. Whether it’s been a year or 12 years since your last screening, our compassionate team is here to help you get seen quickly and confidently, without judgment.
Let’s look at why staying on top of yearly breast health checks matters and clear up a few common mammogram myths.
Why get your mammogram this year?
A mammogram is an X-ray image of your breast that can find signs of breast cancer when it’s most treatable—and research proves that early detection saves lives. While any form of cancer is frightening, mammograms have helped to lower the number of breast cancer-related deaths by 44% over the past three-plus decades. Regular screenings are also a reason why there are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. alone.
Who needs an annual mammogram?
Women at average risk for breast cancer should get a mammogram every year starting at age 40 and continuing through age 80, according to Society of Breast Imaging guidelines. If you’re at higher risk, which may include a family history of breast cancer or the presence of genetic mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, you should get a mammogram and breast MRI once every six months.
Under age 40? The number of younger women receiving a breast cancer diagnosis is increasing. Talk to your OB/GYN or primary care provider about your risk factors and whether you should start screening earlier.
Can I get breast cancer even if I have no risk factors?
While risk factors help determine who needs to get screened, they are only a partial indicator of who may or may not get breast cancer. Research shows that between 60% to 70% of people with breast cancer have no risk factors. Additionally, only 5% to 10% of breast cancers are inherited.
Risk factors in addition to family history and genetic factors include:
- Age: Most breast cancers are diagnosed after age 50
- Reproductive history: Women who started their menstrual periods before age 12 or began menopause after age 55 are at higher risk
- Dense breasts: Dense breast tissue makes it harder for mammograms to pick up tumors
- Personal health history: Past diagnoses of breast or ovarian cancer—or prior treatment using radiation therapy to the chest or breasts before age 30—rasies your risk for breast cancer
Other risk factors—such as being overweight, drinking alcohol, smoking, or not getting enough exercise—are within your control. Ask your primary care provider for a plan to help you reduce your risk.
If I do self breast exams regularly, do I still need to get an annual mammogram?
Yes. Self-breast exams are important, but mammograms can reveal subtle signs of breast cancer that can’t be seen or touched. Research shows that annual screenings can sometimes help women find breast cancer up to three years before it can be felt.
The high degree of sensitivity is what makes mammograms so successful at finding breast abnormalities like cysts, lumps and calcifications. Annual screenings correctly identify 87% of women with breast cancer.
What if I get a callback after my mammogram?
Most of all, do not panic. Just because you get a callback does not mean you have cancer. In many cases, it simply means that one of the images wasn’t clear, and follow-up tests like ultrasound can help us see things more clearly.
Where can I get a mammogram scheduled quickly in North Idaho?
The sooner you schedule your mammogram, the faster you’ll get your results. That’s why women throughout North Idaho trust Northwest Breast Imaging Center for their annual breast cancer screening. We’re proud to offer same-week appointments for most patients, so you can get peace of mind sooner.
How can I prepare for my mammogram?
You don’t have to take any steps in advance of your mammogram, but there are a few things you can do to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Wear loose-fitting clothing to your appointment. Avoid wearing deodorant, lotion or powder under your arms or on your breasts, as they can sometimes interfere with the images.
Also, if you still have regular periods, schedule your mammogram a week after your period ends, when your breasts are less likely to be tender or swollen.
During your appointment, let your imaging technologist know about any new symptoms you’ve experienced since your last mammogram, especially if you’ve seen any changes in your breasts, felt any lumps or or near your breasts or armpits, or are experiencing any pain. Sharing this information helps your technologist focus on areas that may need closer evaluation and ensures your results will be as accurate as possible.
What can I expect during my mammogram?
At Northwest Breast Imaging Center, your comfort comes first. We offer a calm, spa-like environment designed to put you at ease. Is 3D mammography available in North Idaho?
Yes. Northwest Breast Imaging Center includes two 3D mammogram machines. During a 3D mammogram, your technician will take multiple images of the breast. Those pictures are then combined into a single 3D image, helping doctors find small abnormalities that traditional mammograms may miss. 3D mammograms are often recommended for women with dense breast tissue.
Along with state-of-the-art 3D imaging technology, our center is home to three fellowship-trained radiologists who focus 100% on breast health. Their expertise in mammography, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI enhances the accuracy of mammogram readings and diagnoses.
