Why choose Northwest Specialty Hospital for gynecology?

Leading edge treatments. Our gynecologic surgeons are nationally recognized experts in endometriosis and the management of irregular bleeding, uterine fibroids and pelvic pain. You’ll benefit from minimally invasive procedures that involve little scarring and miniscule blood loss so you can achieve a rapid recovery. We also offer laparoscopic procedures, using a flexible tube and light to diagnose and treat many GYN conditions by making only a few tiny incisions.

Exceptional safety. You’ll receive care in a safe, clean environment at Northwest Specialty Hospital. Our hospital’s infection rate is 13 times better than the national average. We sanitize our surgical suite using a germ-zapping robot (the Xenex LightStrike Robot) equipped with an ultraviolet light that kills pathogens.

Award-winning, individualized care for women. From the moment you step into Northwest Women’s Care, we’ll put you first. Our practice is ranked as the Best in North Idaho for Women’s Health in 2024, and Northwest Specialty Hospital is rated five-stars for quality and patient safety by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Gynecology and women’s care services in Kootenai County

Our vast array of women’s health services and gynecologic surgeries include:

Axonics® therapy

A groundbreaking approach to urinary and fecal incontinence, Axonics® therapy uses a small implant that delivers mild stimulation to the nerves that govern the bladder and bowel. Axonics is safe and effective for treating symptoms of bowel incontinence and overactive bladder, including urinary urgency incontinence and urinary retention. Clinical studies show that 82% of urinary incontinence patients were satisfied with Axonics after two years, and 87% of fecal incontinence had at least a 50% reduction in incontinence episodes with Axonics. Learn more about Axonics therapy.

Chronic pelvic pain (diagnosis and treatment)

Pelvic pain can occur for any number of reasons. It’s typically a sharp or dull ache that starts in the abdomen or pelvis. Sometimes it radiates to the lower back, thighs or buttocks. Other times, women report pain during intercourse or pain related to urination and bowel movements. If your pain is limiting your quality of life, the compassionate team at Northwest Women’s Health can help you find the root cause and take steps to reduce or eliminate the pain for good.

Colposcopy

During a colposcopy, a GYN doctor will examine the pelvic region using a special magnifying glass called a colposcope. This test can help detect abnormal cells, precancerous changes or issues that may require treatment.

Endometriosis excision surgery

Endometriosis affects about 1 in 10 women in the U.S. It occurs when cells that resemble those in the lining of the uterus appear elsewhere in the body—including the bowel, rectum, bladder and other pelvic organs—causing pain and scar tissue. At Northwest Women’s Care, our team includes a fellowship-trained GYN surgeon who received two additional years of education in minimally invasive endometriosis excision surgery. The surgery is safe, effective and delivers better long-term results than other traditional endometriosis therapies. See how endometriosis surgery changed the life of one woman from Coeur d’Alene:

Hysterectomy (laparoscopic hysterectomy)

Women may need hysterectomy for many reasons, including uterine fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic organ prolapse or certain types of cancer. Our GYN surgeons take a minimally invasive and laparoscopic approach to hysterectomy to promote faster recovery.

Hysteroscopy

During a hysteroscopy, a women’s health provider will examine the inside of the uterus using a thin, lighted tube with a camera. This test can help determine causes for abnormal bleeding.

Incontinence sling procedure

If you experience leakage when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise, an incontinence sling procedure may help. During the operation, a GYN surgeon places a synthetic mesh sling under the urethra, preventing it from leaking.

Interstitial cystitis treatment

If you feel discomfort in the bladder wall even when your bladder is empty, it may be interstitial cystitis. Our women’s health team can recommend lifestyle changes, medications and, if needed, surgery to alleviate the pain.

Pelvic organ prolapse (colpopexy, colporrhaphy)

Pelvic organ prolapse is a breakdown in the supportive tissues of the birth canal, which can allow the bladder, rectum, cervix and uterus to fall down into the birth canal. Prolapse can be uncomfortable, yet many women don’t seek care. If you’re living with discomfort from pelvic organ prolapse, Northwest Women’s Care can provide you with options, including surgical repair (colpopexy and colporrhaphy). Ours is the only GYN practice in North Idaho with fellowship-trained pelvic surgeons who have extra training specific to performing pelvic organ prolapse surgeries.

Sympathectomy

The sympathetic nervous system triggers your body’s response to stress (“fight or flight”). In some severe cases, destroying the nerves in the sympathetic nervous system can treat chronic pelvic pain. This approach is typically only used after other treatments have failed.

Tubal ligation

Tubal ligation prevents pregnancy by blocking the fallopian tubes. This form of female birth control is more than 99% effective.

Tubal ligation reversal

If you’ve had tubal ligation, and then decide you want to try and get pregnant, reversal surgery is possible. Northwest Women’s Care specializes in performing tubal ligation reversal successfully. See how this procedure made one local woman’s dream of having a family come true.

Urinary incontinence surgery

You don’t have to live with urinary incontinence. Our GYN surgeons specialize in many procedures to help reduce or eliminate leakage, including sacral nerve stimulation and urethral suspension.

Vaginal surgery and vaginal rejuvenation

Various types of vaginal surgery can repair damage from childbirth, treat pelvic organ prolapse, and improve the appearance and function of the vaginal area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find Axonic therapy in the Inland Northwest?

Northwest Women’s Care in Post Falls offers Axonics®, a groundbreaking therapy that uses mild stimulation to reduce overactive bladder, urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence. Axonics is proven effective, with 82% of urinary incontinence patients satisfied with it after two years and 87% of fecal incontinence patients experiencing at least a 50% reduction in incontinence episodes.

What types of gynecologic surgery does Northwest Women’s Health offer?

We offer a range of therapeutic and diagnostic gynecologic procedures for women in Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene and throughout the Inland Northwest. These include Axonics® therapy, colposcopy, endometriosis excision, laparoscopic hysterectomy, hysteroscopy, incontinence sling procedures, interstitial cystitis treatment, pelvic organ prolapse, sympathectomy, tubal ligation and tubal ligation reversal. Our care team includes the only fellowship-trained minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons in North Idaho.

Why is endometriosis excision surgery better than traditional treatments?

With traditional endometriosis treatments, including hormonal suppression or ablation (burning endometrial tissue), the symptoms of endometriosis can return, with ablation having a recurrence rate between 80% to 100%. By contrast, endometriosis excision surgery removes endometriosis for good in almost all cases. Our team at Northwest Women’s Care includes fellowship-trained specialists in endometriosis excision surgery, giving women in North Idaho the best chance for long-term success.

What are the benefits of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery?

Minimally invasive and laparoscopic procedures are performed through tiny incisions, promoting less pain, less blood loss and faster recovery. The GYN surgeons at Northwest Women’s Care in Post Falls are board-certified and fellowship-trained in minimally invasive GYN procedures.
